Welcome to EDC2021!

In the first week of our course, commencing on Monday 20 September, we are going to continue to spend time becoming familiar with our surroundings. So please do proceed with the following:

Continue spending time reading through the different pages under The Course tab of this site, beginning with the overview, in order to get a sense of the different activities that lie ahead.

Look at the course schedule so that you can add important dates to your diary and sign up for film screenings, tutorials and other synchronous sessions, if you haven’t done this already.

Visit our Miro space where we will be collectively building an online gallery exploring cyberculture, community culture and algorithmic culture. Take time to carefully read about the exhibition and then the Miro space and then set up an account in order to work in this space.

We have created a Museum Cafe towards the left of the main Miro space so please feel free to say hello. The cafe space is really for anything that is not strictly about the readings, the activity, and the galleries. We have also created pointers to ensure all we do here has clarity and is accessible. These can be found at the Miro link above and on the Miro board itself. Please do read these carefully before posting as they are critical to what we do here (especially as we have a good sized cohort).

Dip into the chapter by Boris Groys (2008) about authorship and curating practice, as this will help you to think about your approach to the online exhibition. You will find it under the discussion of curation towards the bottom of this page. An accessible and very necessary reading.

Attend one of informal get-togethers on Tuesday (if you can), where we will get to know each other and discuss what we want to achieve this semester. There is a signup form for all the live sessions on this page along with the joining URL so please do let us know which of the two you might be wanting to attend. The forms are really just to give us indicative numbers so we can plan accordingly. We will be using Collaborate for the first session and the rotating through other spaces in subsequent live sessions.

If you still have time after that, feel free to have a look at the introduction to our Cyberculture block, which will begin on Monday 27 September (Week 2). You can start digging into the readings to get ahead a bit.

And get in touch with me (Michael) by email if you have any questions, are having difficult accessing any of the spaces, or if there’s anything else you need as we become familiar with the course.

Wishing you a pleasant first week!

Michael and James
